    Cool Less than lofty

What's the meaning of "less than lofty" in following sentence:

"A less than lofty, if prolific, career as a romance novelist".

Something like: a career of not high level?

    Thanks

The phrase 'less than lofty' forces a figurative interpretation of 'lofty' - as in "lofty ideals/aspirations/ambition". You can have a lofty tree, but not a less than lofty tree (except as a joke).

So, please, am I right? Not quite sure to understand your answer.

    Thanks
