To Kill a Mockingbird is the title of a book (and later movie) by Nelle Harper Lee. The title is referred to in the book in a discussion
about killing innocent creatures and that it is a "sin to kill a mockingbird" because it does nothing to harm anyone and, in fact, its purpose is only
to sing beautifully for us. The theme is part of the story. You can read it
for yourslef itis one of my favorite books.

    Re: to kill a mockingbird

The title of To Kill a Mockingbird comes from something both Atticus and Miss Maudie tell Jem and Scout: “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” And perhaps the meaning is deliberately left vague, to make the reader picking up the novel in a bookstore or library wonder what it means. So that even before the novel begins, the title starts raising questions about the uses, or perhaps uselessness, of violence. For more information on the book and how to approach reading it, I would suggest To Kill a Mockingbird on Shmoop. Insightful stuff.
