    Do we need an article in this sentence? Is it mandatory or optional?

    'dinner was over' would refer to the evening meal in some home.

    'the dinner was over' would refer to some large function, as in, "The Queen gave a dinner at Buckingham Palace welcoming the French President to Britain."
