    that, realize

    Dear teachers,

I have two questions to ask. In order to provide the context I type part of the passage here.

    No.1
I put all my energies into my work and spent many eyars abroad with my firm. Then I cam back to England to work at Head Office and _______ how empty my life had become. I didn't just work; I wanted a wife and children.

    a. knew b. realized c. understood d. saw
The key is 'b'. My question is: are the others possible?

    No.2
He was given three names, including __________ of a schoolteacher.
    a. that b. one
The key is 'a'. If I use 'b' then it should be 'one of a schoolteacher's'. Is that right?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Jiang

    Re: that, realize

    Dear Jiang:

    1. Any of the answers would work. 'Knew' would be, I think, the least likely, because it would imply a sort of 'flash of enlightenment' experience, but realized, understood and saw sound interchangeable to my ears.
    2. Only 'that' works here.

    I hope this is helpful,

    Petra

I think 1.b. is OK. Here's one scenario:
He wanted to choose a tutor for his children, and he preferred a school teacher. He asked his assistant to find three suitable people as a short list that he could choose from.
"He was given three names, including one of a schoolteacher."
