    more of a chance

We say 'He does deserve to be given a chance !' but I read this sentence:

He does deserve to be given more of a chance !

Why is 'more of' added to the sentence? What does it mean? Why not 'more chances'?
    Thank you in advance.

    Both ways are acceptable.

    Re: more of a chance

'He deserves to be given a chance': say a person is being considered for a senior position in a company. He may have been excellent in his current position, but someone believes this new job is beyond his capabilities. I may speak up for him, and say that with his excellent performance to date, he deserves to be given the chance to prove he can do the job.

'Paul deserves to be given more of a chance' : Paul was appointed to the new job, but then seems to have made a big blunder e.g. say, a big contract was lost. One person blames his inexperience, another considers that other factors are to blame. Before demoting him, I might speak up for him and say that he deserves more of a chance (more time to show how good he is in the job) than remove him from the post after one set-back.
