    fewer vs less

    please help. ı know the difference between fewer and less is countable and uncountable nouns, however i am not sure of the following two sentences. please provide the answer and explaination.

    There are......... rainforests.
    There were......... factories.

    "They are fewer rainforests". OR "There is less rainforest". It depends on whether you take the view that you can count rainforests.
    "There are fewer factories." This one shouldn't require an explanation because you know the rule. Are you saying you aren't sure whether factories can be counted or not?
