    Question will/going to

    Hello everybody,

I think you are going to fail the exam unless you work harder.

Why "going to" and not "will"???

    Thank you!

Going to is often used when the future action/situation seems definite.

It expresses a sense of the situation in the future being certain based on present evidence, and suggests that the (evident) present situation will somehow culminate in the future situation.

Your poor school work (present situation) is going to cause you to fail exams (culmination of the present situation in the future).

However - to me - will is also fine in this context as we use will to express predictions.

I agree. As you say, in this case both are possible, which of course is not always the case. If the process has already started then, as one knows, going to is the only option:

She's going to have a baby (if she's already pregnant, will is not possible.)
It's going to rain (if you see black clouds or feel a few drops of rain falling on you, will is no longer possible) etc.
