What I have noticed as an EFL teacher is that by enlightening my students on the origins and evolution of the English language -even if it's just a quick summary - actually helps them adapt to one of the least phonemic languages in the world. In some cases, students accept the difficulties in the English spelling system by dropping persistent linguistic prejudices.
