Question What is meaning of "so long" here?

    Dear Teacher,
    I read this sentence:
I thought it did not matter if I said things which were discreditable, by my interrogators' standards, about people abroad so long was they were true.
Then, what is meaning of "so long" here?
    Thanks.
    G.

Re: What is meaning of "so long" here?

This is the kind of error that creeps into the colloquial speech of some native speakers. It is a form of 'as long as they were true.'
Then, 'as long as' means 'provided that/on the condition or understanding that '.
    Is the speaker an Australian?

    Dear Teacher David L,
Thank you very much for your kind help and good reply!
The speaker was an cockney not Australian. According to your good guidance, "so long was" could be misprinted, I suppose.

so long was they were true.

I could imagine a cockney saying 'so long was they true' but not 'so long was they were true.'

Not even thinking about cockney, I took it that 'was' was a typo for 'as'.
