    'follow up with'

Given that many Canadians are not registered, consular staff are requesting that emergency coordinators follow up with any Canadians they know to be in Mumbai," he said.

    Hi,
What does this expression mean, please? To keep in touch? The meaning I know for 'follow up' doesn't seem to fit this sentence.
    Thanks.
