    further and farther

    Hi,
I wonder if these words are synonyms when the meaning is ''more distant'', please. I also would like to confirm that ''further'' also means ''additional'' and
that this meaning is not applicable to ''farther''. A few examples bellow:

A result that was further (or farther) from our expectations than last time.

Went only three miles further (or farther).

Mayor David Miller yesterday expressed optimism that further (not farther) agreement could come within days.

    Thanks.

    Re: further and farther

Farther is literal distance, further is figurative distance.

    Further may also mean additional.
