    Question mole =tipster?

    Hi!

    mole = tipster?

    Thanks!

Tory MPs contrasted the case with that of leaks of sensitive information to BBC business editor Robert Peston.
They raised suspicions that a 'mole' inside Downing Street or the Treasury had passed Mr Peston a string of market-moving banking 'scoops'.
Former Tory leader Michael Howard pointed to Mr Brown's reputation for obtaining Government leaks when he was an Opposition MP.

'If this approach had been in place when Gordon Brown was in opposition, he'd have spent half his time under arrest,' he said.

Miss Smith denied that ministers had been involved in any way in the arrest of Mr Green.

Not a tipster, but someone working undercover and uncovering "secrets" which are then released to interested parties. Comes from the little animal that lives underground and hunts worms = http://www.wildcru.org/research/farming/moles/mole1.jpg

    Hi Anglika,

Thank you for your help. But I am not clear about the difference between 'tipster' and 'mole'. Does 'a mole' refer to a spy? Could you elucidate them? Thanks!

    tipster noun [C]
a person who gives information to people, usually in exchange for money, especially about the likely winner of a race or competition, or who gives information to an official organization especially about someone who has done something wrong:

    Re: mole =tipster?

"Tipster" is used in relation to sporting bets and the information that can be used to decide on them.

I would not say that it is generally used for someone who tips off the authorities about illegal or poor business practice.

A mole is a subversive entity metaphorically working underground, sometimes providing information to foreign powers but more usually releasing sensitive information to the media.

    Re: mole =tipster?

    I'm not a teacher.

    Hi thedaffodils,

There are a few further definitions concerning the matter in question:

tipster(n) = 1. one who sells tips or information, as to bettors or speculators (especially at the racetrack) 2. one who gives incriminating information about others: informant, informer, tattler, tattletale. Informal rat. Slang fink, snitcher, squealer, stoolie, stool pigeon

informer(n) = one who, on a confidential basis, gives information about some wrongdoing to the police or other governmental authorities.
incriminating (a) = charging or suggestive of guilt or blame
rat(n) = a despicable person, especially one who betrays or informs upon associates

In my opinion “rat” is something of the same kind as “mole”.

There is a synonym of the term “tipster” namely "tout"

tout(n) = one who obtains information on racehorses and their prospects and sells it to bettors.
tout(v) = to obtain or sell information on (a racehorse or stable) for the guidance of bettors.

    Regards,

    V.
