    Phrasal verb (Not a teacher)

    How can I explain
    base on (phrasal verb) clearly?
    the explanation:
"If you base something on facts or ideas, you use those facts or ideas to develop it" is unclear

    To use as a basis/foundation.

If I wanted to understand how a person might be feeling, I could form my ideas on a psychological basis (base my ideas on the field of psychology).

Likewise, if I wanted to construct a bridge, I could (and almost certainly should) base my ideas on the field of engineering.

So if I based my facts and ideas on bridge engineering, I would use the accumulated wealth of knowledge which has been developed over the centuries in the art of bridge building. I would use this knowledge (this base) to develop my own ideas.

The "base" can be thought of as a platform, but more specifically as a source; a feed (a supply) which provides the necessary means to accomplish something, not just something material like building a bridge, but also things of a more abstract nature such as understanding how a person feels (if such a thing is - to even the slightest degree -possible).
