    Re: School family fair

If you give it your best try, then someone can help you make corrections.

For starters, I don't understand what a school family affair is? I would have understood a school affair (maybe you have a graduation to attend) or a family affair (maybe it's a family celebration) - but I'm not sure about a school family affair. Perhaps you mean someone in your family is graduating and your whole family is attending the affair?

Also, you might want to consider the difference between a vacation and a leave.

Typically, you are given a certain number of days off each year as vacation and you are paid for those days off. So to ask for vacation for an affair would really just be to ask to schedule your vacation days. It is really no one's business what the affair is - it's your right, if you are within the company policy for days off, amount of notice, seniority, etc.

Leave, on the other hand, is typically without pay. You want an excused absense, but do not expect to be paid for it. We ask for leave in emergency or unplanned extraordinary events - which may well be your situation here with your "school family" affair. To ask for leave, it is quite appropriate to mention the reason that such an unplanned absence is requested.

Maybe then, this will help you get started?

Ah, I see that while I was writing my dissertation, you DID post a sample. However, my questions about affair and vacation vs leave still stand.

Could you re-phrase your letter so it is clear to me what you are asking for?

    Re: School family fair

sorry here in my country for the special occasions /events in school like family day in school, we use the word school family affair.
We also used vl ( vacation leave ) as a term in our office.

Do you think my letter is correct

Ahmm... What if i used this:

I would like to use my 1 day vacation leave to attend to my sons school fair.

    Re: School family fair

"I would like to use my 1 day vacation leave to attend to my sons school fair."
    Maybe as
"I would like to use one day of my vacation leave to attend to my son's school fair."

I am assuming yuo have more than one day of vacation leave in a year? Your version asks for your one (and only) day of vacation leave.

If you are asking for an additional day of leave, without pay, try this:
"I would like to take one day of unpaid vacation leave to attend to my son's school fair."

I mentioned before that if it was your entitlement to paid vacation days that you were simply scheduling in advance, it was no one's business what the occasion was. However, as you are asking for this day next week (very short notice), it is good to mention a reason, something that is itself inflexible.
