term for place where coffin is placed

What do we call a place where we place the coffin with the dead body in it and where funeral is conducted before the body is taken away to be cremated?

Where I live, we usually place the coffin in a feld near the house of the dead person. Do we call such a place "a funeral place"? If now, what is the correct term?

    Many thanks in advance.

Try Catafalque - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . Generally, the climate here doesn't encourage outdoor venues. A figure of public importance often has a period of Lying in State where members of the public file past the coffin.

Re: term for place where coffin is placed

In Canada, it is in a place of business called a funeral home. The business takes care of the body, prepares it either for cremation, or to be buried in a cemetery. The family of the deceased has the use of a large room in the funeral home for as many days as they wish to use it, and have the money to pay for that use. Friends, relatives, neighbours may come to the place to pay respects to the deceased, and also to express sympathy to the remaining family.

On the day of the funeral there is generally a service of remembrance, then the body with the coffin is taken either to the cemetery for burial or to the crematorium for cremation.

Sometimes cremation takes place before the service of remembrance, and then the urn with the ashes is at the service.

Sometimes cremation takes place without any type of service.

A "Chapel of Rest" is where a coffin would be taken before the burial.
