    what function?

    The sentence is:

    He seemed to catch the faint smell of...

    He-->S
    seemed to catch--> ???
    the faint smell--> DO

    I can't find no solution for "seemed to catch"! How can one analyze this part?

    Oh, maybe I got it now! Is the following right:

    He --> S
    seemed --> V: VP
    to catch the faint smell --> DO:inf-cl

    in which is:
    to catch --> V:VP
    the faint smell --> DO
