    In the most general terms, an antecedent is something that comes before something else.

    Grammatically, an example of an antecedent is shown in this sentence:

    "Anna wasn't sure she could climb the rope.

    In this sentence the noun 'Anna' is the antecedent of the pronoun 'she'. Anna comes before 'she' and lets you know who 'she' is.
