    Americans sing the national anthem

Why when Americans sing the national anthem, there's always an image of taking off a cap or a hat?

There was a time when a gentleman doffed his hat (doff= to briefly lift one's hat as a greeting or token of respect) whenever he passed a lady in the street.

No longer. But we always remove the hat as a sign of respect for the National Anthem - America and England - and in any ceremony where a prayer is said e.g. gathered around a Cenotaph on Armistice Day, when we remember those who fell in WW1.

It's a general sign of respect. When I was at primary school in the 1950s we were required to raise our cap (a peaked hat) when we walked past a church.

Technically, you're supposed to remove your hat and hold it in your right hand over your heart during the Star Spangled Banner. If you're not wearing a hat, you simply hold your hand over your heart.
