    semi-colon doubt

Thus, India Post introduced a cash-on-delivery service in the form of Value Payable Post (VPP) over 100 years ago; and has recently introduced a web based many-to-one payment/bills collection facility in the form of e-Payment.

Is the usage of ';' in the above statement correct? Please explain why and why not?

    Thanks so much

    Re: semi-colon doubt

The two ideas expressed, of something 'introduced' 100 years ago, and something 'introduced' recently, are two main clauses. They are making a contrast, but are also similar, so better kept together, (rather than separate sentences.) That would make for a rather long sentence if only a comma was used, so a semicolon both indicates a longer pause, and also preserves the unity of the ideas.

    Re: semi-colon doubt

Thanks David. Ok, semi-colon gives a longer pause, fine. But then even the normal ',' is more than sufficient, right? then why semi-colon?
