    Question What is psychedlic toenail?

    Context:

Mary and Peter got divorced. Their 5-year-old son lived with his mom Mary. One day, Peter picked him up to play bowling with his girlfriend. The boy intentionally tossed the bowling ball off to the foot of Peter's girlfriend's.

Later, Mary asked Peter how his girlfriend was. Peter answered, "She's kinda got a psychedelic toenail."

    Question:

    What is psychedlic toenail?

I don't think the definitions of the word are right for this context.

    psychedelic adjective
1 (of a drug) causing effects on the mind, such as feelings of deep understanding or seeing strong images:
    psychedelic drugs
2 Psychedelic art or clothing has bright colours and strange patterns of a type which might be experienced by taking psychedelic drugs.
    Source: the Cambridge Dictionary

    Thanks!

I think it means that her toenail had become bruised and coloured by the impact of the bowling ball.

The boy had a strong feeling towards the girlfriend of his father. He intentionally threw that ball to avenge the feelings of hurt and disrespect, as he thought it was the girlfriend of his father who broke his family. The toenail did not bore the mark of ball hitting it, but the child's strong image of a woman taking his mother's place which made him act in the manner.

    Hi Bhaisahab,

Thank you for your answer. I think you are right. But why can't I find a close definition from dictionaries? Is the word -psychedelic usual in English speaking countries? If no, is 'bruised and coloured' the most usual words for such a case? Thanks!

Psychedelic is quite widely used, but not usually in connection with toenails, bruised or otherwise. 'Bruised and coloured' may be the right description but there may be other better words that I don't know.

    Re: What is psychedlic toenail?

'Bruised and coloured' may be accurate, but the intentional overstatement of 'psychedelic' makes it quite a common way to describe a heavy bruise (at least, if 'quite common' may be an overstatement, it's certainly not a surprising word in that context). Bowling balls are very heavy (several kilos)!

    Bhaisahab and BobK,

    Thank you for your replies!

BobK, I think that little boy used a bowling ball for children, so it might be not that heavy.

    Have a good one there!

Dictionaries simply don't have the mental capacity to make connections between things like "psychedelic" and "toenail". My IT experience in Artificial Intelligence has convinced me that they never will, because they lack the ability to deal with common sense, and can't prioritise probabilities very well like real people can.
This is why arguments from dictionaries carry little weight in some of the discussion we have here.
(That may have been a rhetorical question, but I had to answer it)

In Medicine, we would call this an irregularly discoloured subungual haematoma. (I know you wanted to know that!)

    Hi Raymott,

Thank you for your answer and comment. It is a bit strange for me to learn the medical term with "discoloured" while ordinary native speakers say bruised and coloured.

I think 'discoloured' refers to the skin loses its normal colour and "(bruised and) coloured" refer to physical symptom of inflammatory skin -red, black and blue.
