    on a high

    Hi

He went out on a high.

---I think it means that he left home when he was still a bit drunk, right?

    Re: on a high

Not necessarily. While being "high" is commonly associated with either alcohol or drugs, it can also mean being very excited about something.

For example............ "I went to a concert of ............ (favourite band) and was on a high for hours after."
It can also mean anticipation.................."I am on a high just thinking about going to that concert!"

Or that things went really well, and then he departed, similar to the expression "He left on a high note."

Context will tell you what it means.
