Exclamation I dont get this sentence

What each of these literatures has in common beyond their special and distinctive reginal characteristics is that they emerged in their present form out of the experience of colonization and asserted themselves by foregrounding the tension with the imperial power, and by emphasizing their differences from the assumptions of the imperial centre.

    Please explain the bolded part....

Can you quote more of the text?

The sentence you've presented doesn't look correct, regardless of its incompleteness.

It means that the literature made the conflict (tension) with the imperial power a central theme (foregrounding). Some "literatures" might concentrate on national identity, or they might avoid politics altogether and emphasise love stories or adventures. Post-colonial literatures put the imperial conflicts into the foreground.
