# Thread: in fact, a and one,shape

1. ## in fact, a and one,shape

Dear teachers,

I have three questions to ask:

No.1
He did not repay me five hundred dollars; ______ he wished to borrow another five hundered dollars.
a. in fact b. indeed c. instead
The key is 'c'. Could you please kindly explain why 'a' and 'b' are not correct?

No.2
Stella is ________ students of Mr. Jone's.
a. a b. one c. the
The key is 'a'. I agree. 'b' is not correct because it lays stress on '1' not '2'. Is that right? Could you please kindly explain what's wrong with 'c'?

No.3
Parents and teachers hsould work together to ____ students' lives.
a. influence b. shape
The key is 'a'. No problem. Could you please explain why 'b' isn't correct?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Dear Jiang,

Could I ask if 'S' is typo or not?

3. ## Re: in fact, a and one,shape

Thank you very much for picking up the mistake.
It is 'student'.

The key is 'c'. Could you please kindly explain why 'a' and 'b' are not correct? Any of these answers would work. 'Indeed' is the weakest, because it doesn't show the intended contrast. But 'in fact' could be used effectively, especially in conversation to express the depth of one's disapproval of the behavior.

No.2
Stella is ________ student of Mr. Jones.

C won't work unless Stella is the only student of Mr. Jones, or unless the sentence goes on to say something like: Stella is the student of Mr. Jones I was telling you about. (a student: indefinite; the student: definite)
By the way, 'Stella is one student of Mr. Jones,' is not incorrect, but as you say, it's not the best choice.

No.3
Parents and teachers should work together to ____ students' lives.
a. influence b. shape
The key is 'a'. No problem. Could you please explain why 'b' isn't correct?
It seems like a matter of opinion. People do say 'her parents shaped her life.' Perhaps the word 'influence' is considered more appropriate because it suggests a gentler effect, leaving room for the students themselves to 'shape' their own lives with the aid of the 'influence' of parents and teachers. (?)

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Dear pyoung,

Thank you very much for your explanation. Now I see.
Could you please explain why you put a (?) in Question 3?

Dear Jiang:

I added the (?) because my explanation is only my best guess as to why the test makers preferred 'influence' over 'shape'.
