    Question A Grammar Question

    Hello!

One of my students asked me today this question ...

Why do we use different voices when asking about birth and death?

Where was he born? passive voice
When did she die? active voice

    This was my answer:

As far as grammar is concerned the verb "born" is a transitive verb whereas die is not ...

    Do you have another answer?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: A Grammar Question

I think your answer is sufficient.

"To bear" is a transitive verb, and the mother is the agent: the mother "gives birth".

An active version of the sentence sounds awkward, unatural, and would not be used.

    Where did she bear him?
