    Question Translation problem

    Dear teacher,
I am translating a book from English into Italian, I cannot understand the meaning of the sentence

' You wouldn't believe, Ellie, how high the fellows play.'

the context is a talk between a lady and a young relative for the first time in London during 'the season' in the early ninteenth century. She is asking him if he is enjoying himself in town. The boy likes playing cards and betting and he does that in exclusive gentleman's clubs about town.

    Thank you for your help.

It means that he is surprised by the high stakes, large amounts of money, that the others play for.
