    to be on mushrooms

    Hi guys!

Does the phrase "to be on mushrooms" mean only that we go somewhere and pick mushrooms? Can it also mean that someone was on high, under the influence of drugs, or rather not???

    Re: to be on mushrooms

Usually, if someone is "on mushrooms," it means that they have ingested the hallucinogenic variety and are "tripping."

    Re: to be on mushrooms

(NB: not 'on high' (which means 'celestial' and is only used in religious or pseudo-religious* contexts) - they are just high. There's a recent informal use, where the adjective becomes a noun referring to the the state of being affected by a stimulant: 'he is on a high', 'by the time they had come down from the high...'. But that is very informal, and unless your accent is very good people will assume you're making a mistake.

    * An example: [people in a small office have had an instruction from head office; someone has been on holiday and has not yet caught up with their e-mails] - 'Haven't you heard: we have received a commandment from on high, telling us 'Thou shalt not use the company's computers to browse on You-Tube'.
