    Unhappy please Tell me meanings

    kind teachers

I don't understand the following colum of the The New York Times.
The colum has too difficult words or phrases.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/12/op...dowd.html?_r=1

(1)Could you tell me the summary of the colum?

(2)Could you tell me the meaning of the following sentences?
"If not this woman now, Hillaryís supporters would ardently ask me, what woman ever?"

"Itís W., Cheney and Edward Liddy, the C.E.O. of A.I.G. ó who canít seem to stop the conga line of bailout beneficiaries from going on luxury retreats, even though taxpayers have to keep ponying up ó who may have clinched the case that overprivileged white men are biologically or cognitively unsuited to hold higher office."

"Palin was hopelessly over her head swiveled around and blasted Palin to the press as hopelessly over her head."

(3)Could you tell me the meaning of the following words?
    "mind grapes";"thoughtsicles";"brain droppings";"whack-job diva"

    Re: please Tell me meanings

It's Maureen Dowd who is the whack job. Sarah Palin is the governor of a state, and Maureen Dowd is a bitter, small-minded op-ed columnist. (Dowd is not a reporter.) Dowd is not particularly concerned with facts. Only opinion. Dowd's whole point is to show people how clever she is.

(Remember how important context is for figuring out things.)

Someone who is in over her head has taken on more than she can handle.

    Meaning:
If Hillary can't succeed perhaps no woman will.
(Perhaps you are in over your head with this one.)

Maybe you are right. I am in over my head with this column. It is too difficult for me, but I want to try to at least understand the outline with native speakers' help.

    Re: please Tell me meanings

It's simple. Dowd doesn't like Palin's politics, but she can come right out and say that. (That would be honest.) Instead, Dowd uses her column to say that Sarah Palin is stupid.
