I am writing a dramatic work and had considered the title "The Suffered Son". However, my collaborator and I are a little concerned about the meaning 'suffered' takes in this context.
I was hoping it meant "The Son who Suffered" (simply shortening it for dramatic effect). Now however, I have a terrible suspicion it actually means "The son who was tolerated/allowed" in this context, much as in "Suffer the children".
Please could someone who is more expert in the language clarify this for me?
Welcome to the forums.
You cannot actually say "The Suffered Son" if you want to imply the son suffered from something; as you surmise, it would mean that he was tolerated.
The Son who Suffered seems a good title; alternatively you could say The suffering son
