Exclamation Really need help with metaphors: Growth, solution& stability

    Dear teachers,

I am now studying about the most significant changes of TESOL over 40 years: learner, subject matter, method, and sociopolitical & geographical issue. In the text describing those issues, the author says :' The story has to develop in a particular direction, bring out certain themes, employ dominant metaphors, and manifest specific organizing principles. For example, let us consider in some detail the dominant metaphors that organize the story in the 25th anniversary issues: growth, solution, and stability'.

I am so confused of the 'metaphors' used inhere. How could you experienced please help me get understanding on this thing? Also, what could you tell us about those four changes mentioned above?

    Thanks so much,
Warm regards with a wish for a Merry Christmas and Happy New year!

I am confused too. A metaphor is a symbol for something else. I don't know what growth, solution, and stability' are metaphors for.

The author uses those three metaphors talking about the changes of TESOL in the last 40 years. In other words, that is about the 40 year story of TESL organization:(

    - 1st metaphor(growth): Silberstein descibes all the articles in her editor's notes: 'Taken together these comprise a portrait of our profession as it enters its institutional and intellectual maturity'. Larsen- Freeman (1991) takes thie metaphor to great lengths in her comprehensive treatment of SLA research'.......
    - solution: (Problem- solution dialectic): used to discuss ' this quarter century of accomplishment' in terms of ' the major issues and challenges that are currently engaging us'.
    - Stability: the hoped- for arrival of harmony and synthesis after an uncertain period of confusion and disequilibrium.

They are confusing to me :(

I guess we are both confused. I still don't know how those terms are metaphors.
