    put up a fight

    Hello everyone,

Happy New Year and best wishes for the teachers and learners on the forum.

I'd like to ask whether "put up a fight" is a synonymous to "put up a resistance" and if there are any other nouns which could follow up "put up" with the same meaning of offering resistance ?

    Best regards

    Re: put up a fight

"put up " means to "accept" when used as:
    put up with you
    put up with the weather

"put up a fight" means to to resist. It's a unique expression.

    Re: put up a fight

    I’m not a teacher.

    Hi velimir,

“Put up” has many different meanings:

    put-up: Definition from Answers.com

There are a few words concerning the matter in question:

put up a fight = put up resistence = show resisttance = offer resistance = defend

I'm not going to put up a defence,
Coalition parties put up a final defence.
Nevertheless, Vichy French forces put up a strong and bloody resistance to..
They have put up a formidable defence
    They put up a goodfight.
They put up a poor fight.

Happy New Year and good wishes.

    Regards,

    V.

    Re: put up a fight

Thank you very much for the answer Vil :)
Best wishes to you too in the new year. I hope it will bring you only joy.
I needed to know if the words like "resistance" , "defence" and so would give about the same meaning as "fight" when combined with "put up" in this way. I'm still not sure if the meaning is changed significantly with those words as the follow ups of "put up".

Thank you for the help again

    Re: put up a fight

In most circumstances, 'to put up a fight' and 'to put up a (strong) resistance', can be used interchangeably.

    Re: put up a fight

    Hi velimir,

There is no doubt about that. The following three sentences would put an end to all doubt.

Did Poland put up a fight against German's invasion in 1939?
Did Poland put up a defence against German’s invasion in 1930?
Did Poland put up resistence agaist German’s invasion in 1939?

    Regards,

    V.
