How do we understand this sentence?

--In fact, Ballantine has made a writing career out of working hard jobs ,earning low wages and moving from place to place .--

I don't know if I can understand 'working hard jobs ,earning low wages and moving from place to place ' as characteristics of the writing career, or it means besides 'working hard jobs ,earning low wages and moving from place to place ', Ballantine made a separate writing career ?

    Thank you.

I think it means that as a source for his literary output, B used his experience of working in/at hard jobs. (I think in Br Eng we'd normally expect a preposition there, or a different verb - 'doing hard jobs'; I've heard of 'working long hours' or 'working nights', but 'working hard jobs' doesn't sound quite right to my ear.)
