    Question about by

China still regards Taiwan as a renegade province that must eventually come back into Beijing's political fold, by force if necessary, although Ma's election has cooled the atmosphere dramatically.

    ------------------------------------

I have problem approving 'by force' being used in this way because it is illogic.

You don't come back by force and you are forced to come back.

Am I correct in understanding this?

No, it is fine. come = move toward, either by force or without.

    Re: Question about by

If I put it this way, would it be better?

China still regards Taiwan as a renegade province that it must eventually take back into Beijing's political fold, by force if necessary, although Ma's election has cooled the atmosphere dramatically.

It means China takes something by force.

The original has a logic problem sounding like Taiwan will come back into China's political fold by force.
