    is/was the first man

Neil Armstrong is/was the first man to land on the moon.

Which verb is the correct one? I believe 'is' should be used?

    Many thanks in advance.

You can use either. Just like you would say:
Fyodor Dostoyevsky is/was the author of Crime and Punishment.

N.A. was the first man to land on the moon.

N.A. is the first man to have landed on the moon.

    Re: is/was the first man

    Hi Clark

N.A. is the first man to have landed on the moon.

What does the question mark indicate? Sorry for being ignorant.

    Many thanks.

    Re: is/was the first man

N.A. was the first man to land on the moon.

N.A. is the first man to have landed on the moon.

These, from Clark, are the correct ways to say it.
