Smile Prone to do or Prone to doing?

    Hi teachers
I always think that 'prone to do' is the only correct expresion, but recently I find 'prone to doing' is also a commonly used one. I'm a little confused what the difference is between them.
could you kindly tell me that? Thanks a lot!

That's news to me, but Swan agrees:
A few verbs and adjectives are used with to before nouns, but are followed by the infinitives of verbs. Examples are agree, consent, inclined, prone.
    (Practical English Usage, 298.2).

But I've certainly heard 'prone to + Ving', and what's a gerund if not a verbal noun?
