    preposition of road/street

    Hi, Teachers.

I saw the following sentences in a book. Wha't the difference between "in the road/street" and "on the road/street"? What's the meaning of "down the street"?

There's one house on West Park Road which is 325 a month.
The second house is in Tithe Road.

    We live in Barker Street.
Thousands of people were out on the streets for the protest.

A band was playing a little way down the street.
    Thank you in advance.

    (not a teacher)

There's one house on West Park Road which is 325 a month.

Houses are in streets, seeing the street somewhat three-dimensional. The houses are not really on the street but next to it.
Why it is "on West Park Road" - well, the only explanation I can come up with is - that's just the way it is said. Maybe because roads are usually in the country and the dimensions are bigger.

Thousands of people were out on the streets for the protest.

The people are actually on the street, where normally the cars would be driving.

A band was playing a little way down the street.

The event is in a house in the same street or on the street itself, but at a distance.

There is a difference between AmE and BrE on this one. In Britain, something is in a street, in North America it is on the street.

So long as you are consistent, use which you like.
