    Arrow ‘cipher’ in music

    In the name of the Merciful Allah,
    Hi, would you please try to think about the meaning of cipher in this quote: Waugh asserts that memory, not saint worship, is what defines religion for Moroccans, and he sets out to chart ‘another way of conceiving religion’ through the ‘cipher’ of the munshidun tradition. "Munshidun" refers to mystical chanters in Sufism. I wish it's not hard to you, Thanks ahead.

    In this context it has the meaning of a "secret language" understood only by those trained in that form of music.
