    please, is there a substitute for this very-hard-to-pronounce word? I mean another word that is equally common and informal, please.

    Not really. If you're talking to someone, though, you could use "span" or (maybe) "diameter", and wave your hands so that they know what you're talking about. If you need a measurement, maybe "it's so many inches wide" will do?
