    Hi,

could you please tell me whether there is a difference between the following sentences:

    1) A criminal prosecution is instituted against XY as the accused of a crime of credit fraud which he is supposed to have committed by ....

    2) A criminal prosecution is instituted against XY as the accused of a crime of credit fraud which he should have committed by ....

    3) A criminal prosecution is instituted against XY as the accused of a crime of credit fraud which was to have been committed by him ....

    Thanks a lot!

    Smile Re: difference

    1) A criminal prosecution is instituted against XY as the accused of a crime of credit fraud which he is supposed to have committed by ....

This sentence thinks that the criminal has commited the crime...but it is not certain.

    2) A criminal prosecution is instituted against XY as the accused of a crime of credit fraud which he should have committed by ....

If you use SHOULD, it sounds as if the criminal had the obligation to have committed the crime. Should implies obligation. (I should be nice to my teacher)

    3) A criminal prosecution is instituted against XY as the accused of a crime of credit fraud which was to have been committed by him ....

    This one is not correct.

    Hope that helps you.
