    stoned out

    Hi

If somebody is stoned out of his mind does it mean that he's very drunk? Can it also mean that he is very stupid?

    Thanks

    Re: stoned out

It means he's on drugs. Could be alcohol, but usually not. "Stoned" for "drunk" seems (in N. America) to have gone out of use in the last forty years. It can't mean he's very stupid.

Abaka is correct. "Stoned" almost always refers to someone being on drugs. If they are drunk, we would say they are "smashed," or "crocked" or "loaded" or any number of other synonyms. But "stoned" is strictly reserved for someone who is under the influence of drugs.

Thank you. Among the last uses of "stoned" to mean "drunk" that I can think of is Billy Joel's song "Piano Man".
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone
This would be the early 1970's, I think.

    Question Re: stoned out

What about stoned in love? What does it mean?

STONED IN LOVE - Chicane (featuring Tom Jones)

If you could see me here this way
    Looking backwards from today
Would you do it all again

If I could roll it back to you
    Just like lovers always do

I'm stoned in love but not with you

    (2x)
[Good luck, cause we're not feeling stoned in love]
    [It's how I'm feeling now]
[I feel the love is made of stone]
We're not feeling stoned in love

If we could wash the past away
Would we go our separate ways
I'll do it all again, as if I care

Is this the way it's meant to be
Stoned in love but not with me

You're stoned in love but not with me

    (2x)
[Good luck, cause we're not feeling stoned in love]
    [It's how I'm feeling now]
[I feel the love is made of stone]
We're not feeling stoned in love

    Stoned in love...

I'm stoned in love love but not with you

[Good luck, cause we're not feeling stoned in love]
    [It's how I'm feeling now]
[I feel the love is made of stone]

"High", right? As though on drugs!

Or could it be something else, do you think?

    PS (Added later)

There's no sarcasm in the question. What is the rest of the album about?

I thought it was like saying I am entirely, as if permanently, or firmly, in love with you (in this case with someone else), in a love that could never be broken, like stone, hard and durable.

Basically, the album deals with things like love, life and existence.

You know, very likely! Given the other lyrics, the extra play on words over the usual "high" meaning seems intended.

    Re: stoned out

In the Billy Joel song, I've always interpreted it to mean that the businessman had popped a pill or two and was washing it down with liquor in order to get high, or stoned.

Sometimes the word "stone" can be used as an adjective to express the extreme, the hardest, the most, the best. The professional wrestler Steve Austin adopted the nickname "Stone Cold" to give the impression that he is so tough, he is beyond feeling and emotion. He will beat down an opponent in whatever method necessary and won't feel a trace of remorse because his heart is "stone cold."

The lyrics you quoted are, I believe, miswritten on the part of the author. Years ago there were several songs about being "stone in love with..." which meant that the emotion felt was as solid as a rock; I'm stone in love with you. I believe the lyricist wasn't clear on the idiom and added a "d" to the word "stone" in error.

    Re: stoned out

So I seem to have been right with my feelings about it. That was the first thing that came into my mind, love solid as a rock.
