Could you please tell me what is the difference between these two sentences? If they both are correct, which one should I say and when?
1) I gave my friend a book for her birthday.
2) I gave a book to my friend for her birthday.
Thank you very much for replying.I would like to know,as a native speaker which one would you prefer?
I would most likely use n°1.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much for replying, but I am sorry I didn't get following.
Moreover, new information is put towards the end of a sentence:
A: What did you give your friend for her birthday?
B: I gave my friend a book.
A Who did you give a book to for their birthday?
I gave a book to my friend.
In the above exchanges, A already knows what is marked in blue ("old information"); what is marked in red comes as new information to A.
