    Cool Right off the bat

What does "right off the bat" mean in following sentence from an extract on movie The Wrestler by Aronofsky:

Rourke recalls that Aronofsky took a hard line with him right off the bat, giving him pause but also gaining his hard-won respect.

    Thank You

He was very severe with him right from the beginning.

Thank You, so "giving him pause" means here "making him to be dubious" (ROurke doubting about Aronosfsky) but at the same time respecting Aronosfsky who has worked hard to gain this respect. Am I right? Hard sentence!

    1. Aronofsky was hostile to Rourke from the word go.
    2. Rourke was not sure he should have any connection with Aronofsky.
    3. Eventually, Rourke formed a liking for Aronofsky.

Yes, but whose the hard-won respect? Aronofsky's or ROurke's?

Cool Re: Right off the bat

Oh, I've just understood, I think, the whole thing: Aronofsky finally gets the respect of Rourke who don't give it easily. Am I right?

Yes, precisely, but one that's hard to get from Rourke.

Rourke is as hard as nails.

respect is a [U]! 'one' is not okay in your sentence.
