    Question singular or plural?

    Hello everybody,

could you please tell me whether I need the singular or the plural, and why?

"The difficulties experienced by international students in writing their thesis/theses in English may lie in the different epistemologies in which students have learned how to write"

    Thank you

each student writes one thesis: thesis
each student writes more than one: theses

Some are not in favour of making this distinction and use the plural for both cases.
