    are these sentences correct?

    1) They were finally able to work out the total cost of the project.

    2) After long calculation, they were able to get the total cost of the project.

    1) is OK.
    2) needs either "After a long calculation" or "After long calculations", or "After many calculations".
    Also "get" is the wrong word to use here. "Work out" is still acceptable in 2); you could use "come to", "arrive at", "determine", "estimate" etc.
