    any

Are these sentences possible or grammatically correct?

    1) Is there any pen on the book?

    2) There isn't a pen on the book.
    - Does it mean the same as 3) "There is no pen on the book"?

    4) There isn't any pen on the book.
    5) There isn't any teacher who knows everything.

    6) Is there any big tree near your house?
    7) Is there any teacher in this town?
    8) There isn't any big flower in the vase.
    9) There isn't any English painting in the living room.
    10) There isn't a cat in the garden.

    Re: any

    Thanks.

However, I am still in doubt if I can or should use "any" with coutable nouns.

    For example:
    Shouldn't I ask:
Is there a pen on the book?

    and not

Is there any pen on the book?

    ?

Is there a pen on the book? you're just asking about a pen. You might expect one to be on the book. Is it a pen that is on the book, and not a pencil? You want confirmation.

    and not

is there any pen on the book? this is stronger; you might not expect a pen to be on the book.

    For example:
    Shouldn't I ask:
Is there a pen on the book? Yes you should.

Is there any pen on the book?

    8) There isn't any big flower in the vase. ditto
    9) There isn't any English painting in the living room. ditto
    10) There isn't a cat in the garden. ditto
All of these sound strange because they are normally phrased in the plural. There is nothing grammatically wrong with them, but few people would say them.
For example, take 8). This might be a response to:
A: Can you get me a big flower from the vase?
B: There aren't any big flowers in the vase. OR There are no big flowers in the vase.

Is there any way we can solve the problem? This is OK, 'any way' is quite a common collocation.
    or
Is there a way we can solve the problem?

Is there any problem with your computer? I still don't like this one.
