    What's the word for this?

    Hello --

The original French explorers in what is now Colorado named a river the"Purgatoire" (it must've been a very troublesome river.)

American settlers couldn't pronounce "Purgatoire"- so they called the river the "Picket Wire"- which is what we call it today.

What's the term for word constructed from another, unpronounceable, foreign word?

    Thanks!

"re-name" is the only thing I can think of because there is no link between the two words.

    The original word was corrupted.

In Michigan, there are many instances where the French attempted to write down the American Indian name for a lake, town or river, only to have the British come in later and re-name them altogether.

    ...
That points to the word I've met in Linguistics literature: "a corruption". Examples:
    • It has been suggested that the word 'hocus-pocus' is a corruption of the Latin words of consecration: "hoc est enim corpus meum"
(If anyone would like to discuss metathesis, see me after the lecture. )
    • Some English pub-names are corruptions of Spanish: The Elephant and Castle (La Infanta de Castilla), The Case Is Altered (La Casa Alta)
