What is meant by "morphophonology"?
What are the factors that condition the distribution of the allomorphs of the plural morpheme in English with reference to morphophonology?
Add -s to the word cat and you get cats, its plural. The letter <s> represents a sound, a phone, that carries a meaning, a morpheme, which is why it is called a morphophoneme.
Allomorphs (for example)
[s] after voiceless sounds; e.g., cats, ca[ts] (t is voiceless, so voiceless [s])
[z] after voiced sounds; e.g., dogs, do[gz] ( g is voiced, so voiced [z])
