    They both signal a contrast in the information that follows with the information that precedes.

    but
    is a coordinating conjunction that joins two independent clauses.

    I have studied the subject(,) but I am still confused.

    however is a conjunctive adverb that modifies an independent clause.

    Aim your attention at the punctuation:
    I am confused. I have, however, studied the subject.
    I am confused; however, I have studied the subject.
