    Pay particular attention to IvanV's (correct) omission of the apostrophe - "it's" means "it has/is".

    Yes, 'its' is not used as a noun-pronoun. It can substitute only an adjective.

    1. The dog is always hungry. Its bowl is always empty.
    2. This isn't the dog's bowl. It is mine (=my bowl). (You can't say: This bowl isn't its.)

    By all means. You can even add that it's always been yours, should the dog be unwilling to believe you.
