    acceptable collocations?

    Dear teacher,
Recently, I came across two phrases that sounded kind of odd:"something became widely used" and " by necessity". I was wondering if these two phrases are commonly found acceptable by the avarage native speaker?
    Regards

The usual collocation is 'of necessity'.
