    You can usually use "very" to modify "great". Consider the following examples:

    There is a very great distance between men and the gods.
    Churchill was a very great statesman.
    The woman who gave her life to helping crippled children had a very great heart.

    An example of using it badly:

    How was the dinner? Oh, it was very great!
